Did people eat more in the '90s? I'm not sure. All I know is I ordered the 1990s Harvest for breakfast at Cora's on Saturday and it sure was a gigantic portion!
There's not a whole lot of selection for brunch downtown...I mean, really downtown, near the Queens Quay area. The closest place we could think of was Cora's. And I guess everyone else thought the same. The line-up was huge! And that too, on such a blustery cold day. Our wait was about 20 or so minutes, normally we'd have gone elsewhere, but there was nowhere else to go, except for maybe the brunch at 5 Senses (or is it Sen5es?), which didn't have a line-up, which we took as it either not being good or being too pricey. Turns out a "gourmet" breakfast buffet will set you back $21.95. A bit too much to pay for eggs and toast, me thinks. As it is, breakfast is the easiest meal to prepare and uses the cheapest of ingredients.
At Cora's it's still a little too much for what it is, but it really hit the spot that day.
Of course, I'm sure everyone could have done without the wait, but when we did finally get seated, our server was really nice and my 1990s Harvest was absolutely perfect....the raisin french toast, the bacon, the eggs, the pile of fruit (all of it exactly like the larger than life photo in the menu) . What a heaping portion. The blueberry crepes were a bit of a dud, but between the two of us we covered all of our cravings...AND some.
Happy Hoggerversary!
It's Foodhogger's 4th Birthday!!
Yes, it's been 4 years since Foodhogger started (well, here on Wordpress, before Wordpress I was on Blogger and then before that on Xanga)!
Anyhow, thank you to all you loyal readers who've stuck by my little food blog through the years. You've seen me transition from the flashy (literally) food snaps to what I hope is better food photography.
Foodhogger started in May 2006 and has grown over the years to be one of the top food blogs in Toronto with international recognition! It's featured on Urbanspoon and Ziplocal and is one of the TOP 50 blogs in Toronto. Recently, Canada's online search directory, the Yellowpages, contacted us to advertise for Calgary restaurants.
Lola's Commissary (Toronto), Miss Cora's Kitchen (Toronto) and Il Fornaio (in the States) are a few of the restaurants who have recognized my reviews and have featured them on their sites!
Here's to more years of happy dining!
Thanks for eating along with me. Birthday Bacon
Messis
Address: 97 Harbord Street, Toronto
Phone: (416) 920-2186
Cost: Valentine's Day special prix fixe menu at $35 pp
Messis sports a minimalist, airy interior, definitely a good thing when seated elbow-to-elbow with love-sick couples on Valentine's Day. We were lucky to score a reservation that wasn't after 9!
Although a prix fixe menu, Messis boasted a much greater selection of dishes (including seafood, chicken, duck, steak and liver!) than other restaurants on the Winterlicious circuit (even though Messis was not on the Winterlicious circuit this year). After sneaking peaks at the items ordered by the patrons beside us, we decided to go with the curried shrimp and crab cakes and the grilled scallops to start.
